Textual Analysis - Blade (1998)

At the beginning of this opening it starts in media res. They have avoided the typical establishing shot which is normally used because they want the audience to be thrown straight into the action in the middle of the two characters conversation, which as a audience we currently don't know whether they are protagonists or antagonists but we assume they are protagonists.

Continuing with the start of the opening, the male character in the car has been portrayed as a stereotypical American. This has been done by having blond hair, which represents stupidity and can be seen to foreshadow his thoughtless actions in the rest of the opening where he seems not to be aware of his surroundings and careless follows the women. Whereas, the women seems more in control. Also, the red hair and matching red lipstick could represent that she is really an antagonist, and this also foreshadows the blood we see nearer the end which represents she is a vampire and likes blood connoting her evilness. Another factor that connotes her power and control is the fact shes in all black. This is because black is seen again as a negative colour due to being dark.

Furthermore, as we can see above, the close up of the woman shows that she has a mysterious look when talking to the male about where they are going. This tells the audience that she knows where they are going as well as making the male once again oblivious to the situation. Also, in the picture above it shows the credits, which are bold and red. The font of the credits are purposely edited in this way because it connotes blood, death and danger. This is stereo typically used in horror films to convey violence that will be shown in the film, relating to their 15 certificate film rating due to the violence and use of blood.  Lastly, the credits are also bold to connote that the film will be serious and strong in violence.

A camera shot used significantly in the opening was a close up. This is evident throughout the opening such as the conversation in the car and also when they are in the rave or 'blood bath'. The reason for this is to show the characters emotion, and what this revealed to the audience is that the male American was frightened in the rave, the people in the rave were unusual and was all drawn towards the American like they was animals and he was fresh meat, which is shown in the picture below. This then lead to audience realising that they are vampires and the American was in danger and has been tricked into coming into the rave.

Another camera shot used a lot too was a low angle shot. This is evident from when they went into the blood bath rave and then throughout the rave, as shown above. The reason for this is to tell the audience that he has been tricked and is now in danger. This is to try get the audience to feel for the American as he is in trouble. To add, it also shows that the they are vampires due to their pale skin and eyes and how they are drawn to the American.

Next, in the opening of Blade, one specific editing technique was used significantly which was a tracking shot. This was used when following the American male and other women from car walking through the slaughter factory into the bloodbath, which then they also used tracking shots to follow the American and the women when they separated. This has been used because it shows where the woman is taking the man, which further emphasises on the control of the woman and the bewilderment of the man.

Furthermore, another editing technique that used was a dolly shot. This is when they are in the rave and the camera does a dolly shot of the room, where you cant really see much however it scans past a hook. Also, another specific part that was important was when it went past the bags with dead bodies which looked human as they walk into the rave. The effect this has is that it hints again at the people being vampires and to show the American is in danger again, trying to get the audience to feel worried for the character.

The most effective diegetic sound used in the opening was the music in the bloodbath. It was rave music and unknown. The purpose of this is to create suspense due to the speed and noise of the music. It was very effective alongside the action because the cuts and camera shots was very quick. This then impacted the audience by creating intense making the audience nervous and eager to know what happens, therefore draws the audience in to the rest of the film.

The mise-en-scene used in the opening was vital. This is evident in the picture above, where I can elaborate on the use of the human shaped bodies in the body bag.   Also, in the picture above it again reinforces the control of the woman and dopiness of the man, showing the stereotype once again of a dumb American. To end with, the lighting in this scene is also used very well because it has made the woman's skin tone more pale to hint once again that she is a vampire, which effects the audience by now knowing that she's a vampire and the American male has been tricked therefore creating sympathy for the character again.
